Herbs or shrubs. Cystoliths present. Leaves sessile or petiolate; leaf blade margin entire or lobed. Flowers in axillary or terminal thyrses, racemes or spikes; bracts and bracteoles shorter than the calyx. Calyx deeply 5-lobed, lobes equal or subequal. Corolla salverform; tube slender, not or scarcely apically enlarged; limb 5-lobed or 2-lipped; lobes +/- equal or 3 of the lower lip slightly larger than 2 of the upper lip, ascending cochlear in bud. Stamens 2, included in corolla tube or exserted from corolla mouth; anthers bithecous, thecae +/- equal, parallel, inserted at the same height, muticous; staminodes 2 or 0. Carpels 2, syncarpous; ovary 2-locular; style included or exserted; stigma 2-lobed, lobes equal. Capsule clavate with a long solid stalk, 4-seeded, retinacula present. Seeds lenticular, ornamented or smooth, trichomes lacking.

Shrubs, up to 3 m tall, glabrous. Cystoliths present. Leaves opposite, green or often variegated magenta-purple with or without pink and/or white; petiole 1-3 cm long; leaf blade elliptic-ovate or elliptic, 5-17 cm long, margin entire, base attenuate, apex acute. Flowers bisexual, +/- zygomorphic, hypogynous, white, pink or pale purple, in cymes aggregated into terminal panicles or thyrses. Bracts and bracteoles small, smaller than calyx. Calyx 3-5 (-8) mm long, divided almost up to the base, lobes lanceolate or sometimes triangular, green or reddish. Corolla white or pink or pale purple; white speckled with red/purple near throat; salverform, 2-lipped; tube slender, 1-1.3 cm long, apically not enlarged; lobes 5, ca. 1 cm x 0.5 cm, 2 in upper lip, erect; 3 in lower lip, deflexed, more or less ovoid or obovoid; lobes white with red/purple mottling. Stamens 2, erect, exserted from corolla mouth, held under upper lip; filaments white or pink; anthers bithecous; thecae +/- equal, inserted at the same height, oblong. Staminodes absent. Carpels 2, syncarpous; ovary 2-locular; style little exserted as staminal filaments, glabrous; stigma bilobed, lobes equal.

Capsule clavate with a long solid stalk, 4-seeded, retinacula present. (Fruit not observed)
